Guadalajara Chivas forward Ángel Sepúlveda has emphasised the importance of proving the city is their home in the upcoming Clásico Tapatío. The match against Atlas this Saturday, October 10 at Estadio Jalisco is a chance to get back on track after two winless rounds in the Apertura 2026.
Fernando Gago's side sits third in Liga MX with 18 points. Sepúlveda explained the squad's motivation heading into the weekend clash. "With hunger, with the desire to play this game. It is a match that is, in a way, different," said the attacker. "Obviously, we see it as motivation; we, focused on our work, want to win, we want to go and show that we are in Guadalajara, that it is our home".
The player added that the goal is for the fans to feel represented on the pitch. "Also that our people feel that way, feel represented on the field," stated Sepúlveda. "I think that is the conviction the team has. We are going to go and we are going to play our game".
The Rebaño Sagrado arrives at the derby after beating América 2-0 last October 5, a result that keeps them two points behind leaders Toluca. However, prior to that win, the team had failed to secure victories in rounds 8 and 9 of the tournament. Sepúlveda noted the squad learned from those results and is now focused on responding against their city rivals.
The forward also highlighted the positive mood of the internationals who returned from the Mexican National Team. He said those players have strong mentalities and are eager to prove why they were called up. The Clásico Tapatío always carries a unique intensity and significance for the city, a factor Chivas wants to capitalise on.
The last meeting between the two ended with an away win for Guadalajara Chivas by 0-1 on March 30. This Saturday, Atlas, sitting sixth, will be a tough opponent in their own stadium. The match will be broadcast on Canal 5, TUDN and VIX in Mexico, and on VIX in the United States.
